Another choice is a Medicare Advantage plan (MAPD or Medicare Part C), which overlays Medicare itself and becomes your primary health plan. This plan will be very similar to a health plan that you would be able to get at work with low or no deductible and copays at the doctor. Full hospitalization coverage is offered, and dental and vision coverage with some providers.

The significant advantage of a Medicare Advantage plan is that the Federal Government subsidizes the premium, and the premium is very low or nonexistent. There are also no health requirements to get the plan.

The disadvantage is that some MAPD plans have a limited coverage areas, high annual out-of-pocket costs, and limited in-network providers. Additionally, the terms can change from year to year.

The other Medicare policy is the actual Medicare Supplement or Medigap policy, also known as Original Medicare. Medigap Plans are named in most states by letters A through N, and coverage varies based on the plan letter.

People who purchase Medicare Advantage (MAPD) plans can change plans freely each year during Medicare open enrollment, from October 15th to December 7th of every year. People who turn 65 have an open enrollment period at that time for Medigap policies, but if they change insurance companies later, they will have to prove evidence of insurability.

When purchasing these plans, it is good to work with a licensed insurance broker who works with several of the major insurance companies, as the rates vary from company to company. Health insurance coverage is not available through the Affordable Care Act for people over the age of 65 if they qualify for Medicare.
