Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona, Banner Health to Create Joint Venture Expanding Services for Medicare Beneficiaries in Arizona
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona and Banner Health have entered into a new joint venture, to be known as Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona Advantage (BCBSAZ Advantage), which will bring enhanced Medicare services to Arizonans. The collaboration brings together two premier organizations with the common goal of improving the quality of patient care, and enhancing wellness and affordability for individuals enrolled in Medicare.
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona currently offers Medicare supplement and prescription drug plans (Part D) to more than 23,000 Arizonans. Through the joint venture with Banner Health, it’s estimated the companies will be serving 25,000 Medicare Advantage enrollees. All terms are subject to final regulatory approval.
The venture will include a Medicare Advantage plan for seniors in Maricopa County and portions of Pinal County, currently known as Banner MediSun Medicare Health Plan.

New Pharmacy Benefits Offer Flexible Plan Designs & Enhanced Value
We are excited to announce the expansion of our relationship with our current pharmacy partner SXC Health Solutions, now Catamaran Corp., for full-suite of pharmacy benefit management services, effective January 1, 2013. With this expansion, BCBSAZ will be utilizing Catamaran’s specialty pharmacy distribution center.
Catamaran Corp., is the fourth-largest pharmacy benefit manager by prescription volume, processing one in every five prescription claims in the United States. The company is positioned to provide our members and clients with a best-in-class pharmacy program through its robust management of pharmacy claims and services. On January 1, 2013, our customers can expect the following value-added benefits:
Customer Service calls for our members, providers and groups expanded to 24/7
Expanded number of medications under specialty benefit
Customer Service number remains the same and new member ID cards are not required
Walgreens will remain our mail order facility
Our large self-funded groups will have the opportunity to look at enhanced benefit changes as you and your BCBSAZ representative discuss your client’s possible plan design changes for their next renewal. Additionally, robust pharmacy reporting to facilitate strategic planning is now available via your assigned Strategic Relationship Executive (SRE).
Seamless Member Experience
The expanded relationship with Catamaran Corp. will not affect member benefits or services. In fact, most members won’t realize the company is working behind-the-scenes to deliver value-added services and pharmacy benefits management for our members. In other words, we expect this to be virtually invisible to members.
The specialty pharmaceutical drug provider will change for only 0.2 percent of our members (approximately 700 people) in 2013. BCBSAZ will provide personalized service and outreach to these members to ensure a seamless transition to the new provider.
